Writerly Pantheon: Part 3 - Zontik
And then there’s Zontik.
Zontik is by far the most stylish of the gods. Some even suspect Zontik to be a girl with a paste-on mustache simply for stylistic purposes, but who would blame Zontik if that is the case? A mustache is a wonderful thing.
Zontik loves the clearly-lit night and often walks on phone wires and laundry lines by light of the moon, delighting in the tightroping skills involved. The play of balance, the careful line that distinguishes one sense of style from another—all this is Zontik’s forte.
It is said Zontik delights in speaking in all sorts of accents, tailored specifically to suit the occasion. It is also said Zontik owns numerous umbrellas, each one also tailored specifically to suit the occasion. Zontik’s umbrellas are said by some to protect it from the spectral rain of silver and fish that sometimes accompanies its progress. Others say that silver and fish raining from the sky is ridiculous, and Zontik simply uses its umbrella to balance better on the tightrope. And some people even suggest that Zontik simply likes the umbrella and uses it as a fashion accessory, but those people often have high child-like voices and are difficult to hear over the wooshing noises, so not too many people pay attention to them. This contrasts with Milla, whose voice is deep and sonorous as the sea itself.
